Scott Mills, Oregon Author Featured in New Dog Book
Minneapolis, Minnesota, November 4, 2008
– Scott Mill’s Kerrill Knaus-Hardy and her dog, Abdul, made history in the
mid-70s as the first pioneering team to use a service dog for someone with
mobility impairments. Knaus-Hardy says, “Abdul’s mission and legacy live on in
every service dog who has come after him.” The journey of Knaus-Hardy, Bonnie
Bergin, and Abdul teaming up to facilitate the first service dog raised by and
for a person with physical disabilities is featured in a new
book, Angel Dogs with a Mission: Divine Messengers in Service to All Life
by authors Allen and Linda Anderson (New World Library, October 1, 2008). The
book is a collection of twenty true stories about dogs who found their purpose
in life and gave without expecting a return.
Knaus-Hardy
specializes in the study of animal behavior and has practiced pet-assisted
therapy for over thirty years. She worked with Bergin at Canine Companions for
Independence in California for fifteen years. She moved to a ten-acre ranch in
Scotts Mills, Oregon, and created the Adaptive Riding Institute (www.adaptiveridinginstitute.org)
to serve people with disabilities by providing riding lessons, custom horse
training, adaptive equipment, and recreational horseback riding for people of
all abilities. She also operates Companion Cavaliers. Even though she has lived
her entire life with muscular dystrophy, with the help of her beloved animals
and supportive family, she has enjoyed going to college; getting married to her
husband, Del; raising her nephew, Shaan, from infancy; traveling to four
countries; and sharing her ranch with dogs, cats, a peacock, a goat, and thirty
horses.
Allen
and Linda Anderson are founders of the Angel Animals Network
(www.angelanimals.net), inspirational speakers, clergy members, and authors of
the award-winning Rescued: Saving Animals from Disaster as well as nine
other books in the popular Angel Animals series. Marc Bekoff, PhD, professor
emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado,
Boulder, wrote in the foreword for Angel Dogs with a Mission: “This book will
change your life and the lives of those with whom you share it.”
As
with the hugely popular Marley & Me, dog lovers will be inspired and
entertained by the dramatic human-and-dog journeys in this new book. The
amazing stories provide laughter, proof that miracles are possible, and tears
-- the good kind.
Amelia
Kinkade, author of Straight from the Horses Mouth, says, “This book is a
tribute to the fact that many of our most effective doctors, nurses,
therapists, police officers, emotional counselors, rescue workers, and
spiritual teachers have four legs instead of two.”
